forth, but an instrument to convey Christ, with the power and virtue of his death, unto me; that in these holy mysteries I may not only commemorate, but effectually receive my blessed Saviour and all the benefits of his passion; that I may have not only a representation, but a participation of him in the sacrament, and that to the outward administration of it may be joined the inward seal of thy Spirit. Oh, let me be so refreshed and strengthened with the banquet of this heavenly food, that I may cheerfully walk on my way to glory, through him who is both Sacrifice and Priest, the Feast and Master of it: to whom, with Thee and the Holy Spirit, be ascribed all honor, glory, and praise, both now and for ever. Amen. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, &c.

OUR Father who art in heaven, &c.

THE BREAD.

I behold, O my Saviour, in thy minister, the representative thou hast appointed, to convey unto us the benefits which are bestowed on thy faithful servants in the bread and wine. In the consecrated bread, the sacrament of thy body, which was offered up as an expiatory sacrifice for the sins of the world, impart unto me, I humbly beseech thee, all the graces and blessings of thy cross and passion. Thine were the pains and sufferings of death, may ours be the benefit; thine the stripes, may ours be the balm; thine the thorns, may ours be the crown. Let us find in thy wounds, our safety; in thy anguish, our peace; in thy cross, our triumph.

O blessed Saviour, biddest thou me remember thee? How should I forget thee? But Oh, that I could remember thee more ardently, more constantly, more effectually; with all the passionate affections of a heart inflamed with love, with all zealous desires to glorify thee, with all fervent longings after thy favor and presence! O, that I had the burning lips of Cherubim and Seraphim to sing thy praise! The thoughts of what thou hast done and suffered for us, are enough to melt a heart of marble with love, to turn a rock into a fountain of tears, to unloose the tongue of the dumb. I see thee, O Lord, fastened to the cross, conflicting with thy Father's wrath, groaning under the weight and burthen of our sins, thy body stretched and racked, thy hands and feet transfixed with nails, thy holy head pierced and agonized with the crown of thorns.

1 hear the taunts of the malefactor, the scoffs and reproaches of the Jews, thy dying groans, yea, the groans of the earth under the weight of thy cross. I see the sun blushing, under a veil of darkness, to behold the Sun of Righteousness under an eclipse. Can, O, can my bosom hold, now that I see the innocent Lamb of God, that taketh away the sins of the world, a bleeding victim on the altar of death? This, O my Lord, might have been the day that I might have been the suffering malefactor, and have drunk the cup of the fierceness of God's wrath. But thou who harboredst no grief of thy own, art acquainted with the just and deadly griefs of others. Thou carriedst our sorrows, who had no occasion to sorrow for thyself. Was ever sorrow like thy sorrow, or ever love like thine?

THE CUP.

THOU hast said unto us, O Lord, this is my blood of the New Testament, which is shed for many for the remis sion of sins. Seal unto me, I beseech thee, all the privileges and immunities of the covenant, which thou hast so graciously established. Release and discharge me from all my debts; from the house of bondage, from the temptations of the world, the powers of darkness, sin, death, and hell. Espouse my cause, guide me by thy counsel, defend me by thy grace. Let thy omnipotence be my guard, thy omniscience my overseer, thy omnipresence my companion and friend, thy mercy my store, thy wisdom my counsellor, thy justice my rewarder and avenger. Let thy holiness be unto me a fountain of grace, thy all-sufficiency the lot and extent of
