PREFACE.

In introducing to the Members of the Medical Association of the State of Alabama, the volume of Transactions for the current year, the Publishing Committee desire to offer a few words of explanation.

It will doubtless seem to the members that the volume has been very slow in making its appearance; but when it is remembered that it was necessary to wait until the first of June in order to give the President time to make his appointments, and when the size of the volume is considered, it will be seen that the work has been pushed as rapidly as could be expected.

Of all the questions which came before the Association at its last session, that which excited most attention and interest was the issue made with reference to the abrogation of fees for lectures in the Medical College of Alabama. The Committee have therefore belived that it was incumbent on them to give the debates on this question as fully as possible, and have accordingly procured from the several speakers summaries of the remarks made by them on the occasion. The strict accuracy of these summaries will be recognized by all who were present.

The Committee have published every thing which was referred to them except a paper by Dr. C. H. Mastin, of Mobile, on the subject of Internal Urethrotomy. This paper, after mature consideration, they have determined to refer to the
