It seems almost incredible that this law should serve the young child as a guide to his activity; but a knowledge of it is indispensable to a proper appreciation of Froebel's system. If this law were not, indeed, at the root of all activity, and were not inborn in every human being, and used as unconsciously as the breath that is drawn, then it might be characterized as absurd.

The result of the application of this law, proves its rightful claim to consideration. Natural laws have always existed, but time is required to understand them. They cannot be invented, but must be discovered. The law of gravitation existed before it was discovered by Newton. So also there was a law for human activity before Froebel found and applied it. The discovery of this law led Froebel to the invention of his educational method. He recognized the fact that the law of development for the cosmic creation must govern the human spirit, and that there is harmony between the material and spiritual world, and in all degrees of existence, from the highest to the lowest. All manifoldness and difference tend toward unity only by conforming to the same law. We do not deal with philosophical specu

lation, which has hitherto presented this law in the form of hypotheses and formulæ. We have to do with its practical application. Froebel employs it in education, and transfers it from the realm of speculation to real life. The task of education is to assist and further the natural development of the child's soul by outward guidance and direction. This is only accomplished when the law according to which development proceeds, is recognized. That is the law which governs every organism, and brings it to its perfection. A natural education is possible, then, only when the law is discovered according to which the human spirit unfolds. Only then will education follow nature and not strive against it. Natural and conformable to law are one and the same thing, for nature always proceeds according to law. The abnormal is a deviation from law.

All nature's laws are God's laws. A law is in itself spiritual, and only perceived by its workings in or upon the material. Froebel's discovery consists in the finding and application to education of a method, based upon law, which offers a sure guide for the harmonious development of the human being.

Hitherto there has existed a method of in
