RAIL ROADS IN THE UNITED STATES.

The aggregate length of all the Rail Roads now finished in the United States and in operation (1842,) are as follows:

The amount of road already in operation in this country, exceeds in total length, the rail roads in all other countries combined. The cost so far is estimated at $120,000,000 and in the course of another year about 800 miles more of road will be completed.

NOTE.-The Governors in all the States are elected by the people, except New Jer. sey, Virginia and South Carolina, who are elected by the Legislatures.

The Governors of the Territories are appointed by the President and Senate of the United States. The District of Columbia is under the immediate government of Congress.

Of the estimated 319,536,232 acres of the public domain, to which the Indian title has been extinguished, it is supposed about two-thirds has been surveyed, about one-half of which has already been sold; leaving upwards of 200,000,000 acres of land yet to be disposed of for the benefit of the Union.
