There are 72 Military Posts and Arsenals in the United States, besides others in a state of forwardness. In times of foreign invasion, insurrection, or rebellion, the militia of the several states, which numbers 1,668,387 officers and men, is under the command of the General Government.

Law of Congress relating to the term of service for Cadets.

"Sec. 28. And be it further enacted, That the term for which Cadets hereafter admitted into the Military Academy at West Point shall engage to serve, be, and the same is hereby, increased to eight years, unless sooner discharged. (See act approved July 5th, 1838.)

NAVY OF THE UNITED STATES.

The principle officers of the United States Navy consists of a Secretary of the Navy, and Board of Commissioners; 68 Captains; 97 Commanders; 328 Lieutenants; 70 Surgeons; 63 Pursers; 24 Chaplains; 103 Passed Midshipmen, and 370 Midshipmen.

There are seven Navy Yards in the United States, viz.
