PREFACE.

THE writer of the following Manual of Instruction published, some two years ago, a book on the same subject, under the title of "Notes of Lessons on the Catechism of the Church of England."

The Notes were arranged and written with a view of assisting trained Teachers chiefly in preparing lessons for their oral instruction in the subject, and it was hoped that Pupil-teachers and Students generally would find the book useful to them in their studies, from the very form-Notes of Lessons-in which it was compiled.

The success of that effort has been so far satisfactory that the writer has been induced to publish, in another form, viz., by Question and Answer, the following Treatise on the Catechism.

The aim in this work has been to place in the hands of Teachers (Sunday School Teachers chiefly) a book which, whilst being simple and plain, would fully and clearly explain, in a form that can be used by everyone-that requires neither preparation nor training—this beautiful and comprehensive epitome of the Christian Religion.

Scripture Proofs have been largely introduced; and, throughout the book, duties that are enjoined or vices that are forbidden have been illustrated, where practicable, by references to Scripture biography, so that the historical characters of the Bible may serve as mirrors wherein we may see ourselves and our human nature."

The matter has been arranged in the same order as the
'Notes of Lessons," and has been obtained from the same
sources, but it appears in a simpler and easier form, and will
be found to appeal more directly to the heart and life.

It is hoped that Sunday School Teachers and others will find

in it a Manual by means of which they may be enabled to teach

their Pupils to return understanding Answers to all Questions

on "the Creed, the Lord's Prayer, and the Ten Commandments,

and on all other things which a Christian ought to know and

believe to his soul's health."

Swinton Schools, Manchester, 1879.
