PREFACE

MATTHEW ARNOLD's poetry is preeminently the work of a scholar and a gentleman, and, as such, has a place in the high school and in the lives of young people. The aim of this little volume, then, is to familiarize, in a measure, the high school student with one of the ablest poetic spirits of the last century and to add one more name to his list of poet acquaintances.
